Saxil's Story

Børge Saxil Nielsen: A Pioneer in Danish Cycling

Børge Saxil Nielsen was born in Copenhagen in 1920 and quickly became a central figure in Danish cycling. At just 16 years old, he began competing in road races and demonstrated great talent. In the 1940s, he was one of Denmark's leading cyclists, achieving numerous significant victories.

Sports Career and Achievements

Børge became Danish champion in 1947 and won the "little Olympics" in the Netherlands in 1948. Although he did not achieve major results at the Olympic Games in London that same year, his career was filled with successes. Among other things, he secured both first and second place at the Nordic Road Championships in 1947 and 1949, respectively.

During World War II, Børge accomplished one of his most significant feats. To avoid German suspicion and interference, he transported penicillin by bicycle from Copenhagen to Holbæk. This medicine saved the life of a boy who was close to death.

After his Cycling Career

After concluding his active cycling career in 1952, Børge founded Saxil Cykler at Vesterbrogade 168 in Copenhagen, which he successfully operated until his death on March 20, 1977.

His story symbolizes courage, determination, and human willpower in Danish history.

72 years later

72 years later, we still proudly carry on the name in the cycling world. On December 1, 2009, we opened our bike shop on Østerfælled Torv, centrally located in Østerbro. In 2014, we launched our own brand-new bike concept, which today has evolved into our three modern city bikes, designed for the urban cyclist's daily life.

The goal was to create a series of bicycles that would have a stylish design, be of fantastically high quality – and still be affordable. The dream and goal were now articulated and in the pipeline.

In 2017, the first model from the series, the Nørrebrocyklen, arrived in our beloved bike shop – designed with inspiration from the simple bicycles of the 1900s. The following year, in 2018, we were also delighted to complete the Østerbro and Vesterbro bikes.

We have always strived for high quality and good service, and we believe our city bike series lives up to this.
